6. Unix Ate My Brain

So I thrust myself again back into computers in general and unix in particular. Emacs, C, Perl, HTML, etc. etc. etc. I was and am hooked. I spend absurd amounts of free time doing all manner of tasks with my Linux box - that same 486 haphazardly upgraded over the last couple of years. I'm trying to scrounge up enough cash to actually buy a reasonably modern machine. I might even (gasp, heresy) dual-boot with WindowsNT so I can see more closely what all the hubbub is about.

I've started doing consulting and trouble-shooting (mostly Win95), offering to go to people's homes to fix their practically brand-new computers and teach them a little about how to use them. My friend Greg and I have begun talking to a few local businesses about doing their web page designs. It's growing little-by-little.

(Postscript, 8/2000: About a year and a half after writing this I landed a job as system administrator for an area ISP/streaming content provider. I was hired strictly on the basis of an interview with the current SysAdmin of the organization as I had no commercial unix experience. At that point I became in charge of 9 network nodes, 20 solaris and linux boxes, 20 cisco routers and remote access servers and numerous other tools. To say my study of Linux and *BSD has paid off for me professionally would be understatement.)
